Tree Planting, Start to Finish

Lauren leads our planting work. It's a team effort, but she handles most of it, from the estimate to the finished planting. We help you choose the right tree for the location, and if you'd like, we'll go pick out healthy trees and shrubs ourselves and bring them to you. Then we plant them at the right depth and install an irrigation system so they get steady water while they settle in. A lot of the tree problems we get called out for started the day the tree went in the ground, so we plant with twenty years from now in mind. And if a spot isn't right for a tree at all, we'll tell you.

Why planting it right matters

  • Right tree, right place

    A tree that fits its spot won't need heavy pruning later to clear the roof, the driveway or the power lines. We look at mature size, sun, soil and drainage before anything goes in the ground.

  • Depth decides a lot

    A tree planted too deep can grow girdling roots that circle the trunk and slowly choke off water and nutrients. Setting the root flare (where the trunk widens out into the roots) at the soil line heads off a problem you wouldn't see for years.

  • Water through the first seasons

    New trees and shrubs need steady water while their roots settle in, and a Tennessee summer is hard on them. Irrigation means they get it even in the weeks you're busy.

  • One crew, start to finish

    You don't have to find a nursery, haul a tree home in the back of a truck, or line up someone else to plant it. We handle the choosing, the pickup, the planting and the irrigation.

Working process

How We Handle It

  1. Look at the spot together

    We come out and look at the spot with you: sun, soil, drainage, overhead lines, and how big the tree will get. Before any digging, you call 811 to have underground utilities marked.

  2. Choose and pick out the plants

    We help you choose trees and shrubs that fit the spot and what you want from them: shade, flowers, fall color or privacy. If you'd like, we'll go pick out healthy specimens ourselves and bring them to your place.

  3. Plant at the right depth

    We dig the hole wide rather than deep, set the root flare at the soil line, and cut away wire, twine and burlap from the top of the root ball so they can't strangle roots later. Then we backfill with the soil that came out of the hole.

  4. Irrigation and mulch

    We install an irrigation system for the new plantings and finish with a ring of mulch 2 to 4 inches deep, kept pulled back off the trunk.

Common Questions

When is the best time to plant a tree in Tennessee?

Fall is usually best. Cool air and still-warm soil let the roots grow before the tree has to support new leaves in spring. Early spring works too, but a tree planted then needs more water through its first summer.

Can you pick out the trees and shrubs for me?

Yes. We can go pick out healthy trees and shrubs, bring them to your place and plant them, so you don't have to haul anything home yourself.

Do new trees need irrigation?

Steady water in the first couple of years is what a new tree needs most, and irrigation makes sure it gets it through a dry spell. We can install an irrigation system as part of the planting.

Can you plant a new tree where you took one down?

Often, yes. The stump has to be ground out first and the chips replaced with soil, since a new tree won't root well in a pile of grindings. Sometimes it's better to move the new tree a few feet over, and we'll tell you if that's the case.
